A primary total knee replacement (TKR) or total knee arthroplasty is a surgery that resurfaces an arthritic knee joint with an artificial metal and plastic replacement parts called the ‘prostheses'. It is most commonly performed in patients of osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis of knee.
Total Knee Replacement after High Tibial Osteotomy
A patient who has undergone a high tibial osteotomy to relieve pain at a younger age may subsequently require a total knee replacement which requires extra technical skills and should provide result as good as a primary total knee replacement if carried out by an experienced surgeon.
Total Knee Replacement in Difficult Situations
A patient not opting for surgery at an appropriate time may progress to development of severe deformities of knee joint which may pose technical challenges at the time of surgery and the patient may require intensive post-operative rehabilitation.
Revision Total Knee Replacement
This is an operation in which the previously implanted knee joint which has failed, is removed and a new joint is implanted. With increase in longevity and carrying out primary knee replacement at a relatively younger age, revision surgery becomes necessary in some patients.
