Bilateral hip and knee replacement in Alkaptonuria

A case of Alkaptonuria which is a very rare metabolic disease of protein metabolism leading to deposition of black pigments in the joints causing early arthritis called ochronotic arthritis. Dr. Mavalankar performed replacement of both hips and knee joints in a patient of Ochronotic Arthritis with excellent result. The patient who was almost bed ridden is now up and about, can walk for 20 minutes and drive car.

This is the first case from India and fourth in the whole world where both hips and knee joints have been replaced in one patient suffering from this condition.

Knee replacement in severe deformities

This highly educated lady, who had severe osteoarthritis of both her knee joints for many years deferred surgery resulting into severe deformities of her legs with destruction of joint and underlying bone. This led to technically demanding surgery and use of special prosthesis to replace her arthritic knee joints. She had complete correction of her deformities after bilateral knee replacements and is leading a normal life 5 years after the operations.
